Understanding Menu Structure

Before adding items, it is essential to understand how 4soft organizes data. The system uses a four-tier nested structure to keep the POS interface organized and user-friendly:

Level

Name

Description

Lvl 1

Category

The broadest classification (e.g., FOOD, BEVERAGES).

Lvl 2

Group

A sub-department or kitchen station (e.g., APPETIZERS, NOODLES).

Lvl 3

SubGroup

(Optional) Further nesting within a group for specific item types.

Lvl 4

Item

The actual product sold (e.g., Fried Tofu, Pad Thai).

Creating a Category

  1. Navigate to the Menu tab in the Backend.

  1. Click the New Category button.

  1. In the Category Name field, type your desired name (e.g., DEMO CATEGORY).

  1. Click Save. The new category will appear in the left-hand folder tree.

Creating a Group

Once the Category is selected:

  1. Click the New Group button.

  1. Enter the Group Name (e.g., DEMO GROUP).

  1. Configure Group Settings: * Set Sales Tax and Printers (e.g., select "Kitchen" or "Bar").

    • Ensure Is Active is checked.

  1. Click Save.

Adding a New Item

Select the Group you just created, then:

  1. Click the New Item button.

  1. Enter the Item Name and any secondary language names if required.

  1. Set Pricing: Locate the Default Price field at the bottom and enter the amount (e.g., 19.99).

  1. Click Save.

Adding Items to the Ordering Layout

Creating an item does not automatically put it on the touch screen. You must place it manually:

  1. Select the newly created item, then click the Add Menu Button.

  2. Assign to the Group:

  • If you already have a group for this new item: click on a group on the left panel, then drag and drop the new item to the right panel.

  • If you want to add a button for the new group: find your new Group in the center list. Click an empty square on the left-side grid to place the Group button.

  1. Click SAVE and then DONE to push the changes to the front-end registers.

Note: Always ensure the "Is Active" checkbox is ticked for any category, group, or item you want to appear on the live POS.

Creating and Attaching Modifiers (Version 4.2.2+)

If a menu item requires a customer choice (like a choice of meat), you must create Modifier Groups containing individual Modifier Items

How to Add a NEW Modifier Group directly to a Menu Item

  1. On the menu setup screen, select the menu item you want to attach choices to

  1. Click “Attached Modifier” to open the modifier window

  1. Click “NEW MOD GROUP”

  1. Input your new group name (e.g., "Meat Choice").

  1. Important: The “NEW MODIFIER” button will be disabled at first. You must click “DONE” to create the group before you can add individual modifier items to it

  2. Once the group is created, add your modifier selections (e.g., Chicken, Beef) and any extra prices associated with them

  3. Click “DONE” once completed. The new group is instantly added to your system and automatically attached to your selected menu item

  1. If you want this choice to pop up automatically when the item is ordered, check the “Forced Choice” box, then click "Done”

How to Edit an Attached Modifier Group:

  1. Select your menu item and click “Attached Modifier”

  1. Select the modifier group you want to edit from the right pane (Note: selecting from the overall list on the left will not let you proceed)

  2. Click “VIEW/EDIT MODIFIER GROUP”

  1. Modifier group editor window appears, and any changes can be made in here.

How to Edit Modifier Items

  1. While on the modifier group setting screen, select a VIEW/EDIT MODIFIER

  1. The modifier item editor for the selected modifier item will appear, and any changes can be made here.
